History of the Garden

Margaret Hermann's dream of creating an organic community garden at St. Anne's became reality on Saturday, April 18, 2009. Over the course of seven hours that day, 32 friends, neighbors and members of St. Anne's gathered on the "island in front of the church" and contributed time, talent and moral support to help us build and plant two raised garden beds and plant four in-ground bed (that had already been tilled and prepped) with nearly 40 varieties of vegetables and herbs. Our workers, who ranged in age from four to 74, included a master gardener, grandparents and grandchildren, neighbors, Wake Forest students and members of St. Anne's.

Initially funded by a $500 grant from Episcopal Peace Fellowship (EPF), the purpose of the garden is to "grow a community garden for the objective of interaction with others in our neighborhood, for nurturing of soil, plants and spirits, for the production of new friends, shared wisdom, good memories, appreciation of nature and, maybe in the end, for the production of something edible to share." Our garden now is featured in Episcopal Peace Fellowship's Nonviolence Toolkit as a tool for creative peacemaking.

Now in its third growing season, we continue to need volunteers to help water, weed and nurture our garden and share stories — and produce with our neighbors. We look forward to getting to know our neighbors better as we come together to maintain our garden in a spirit of peace and mutual understanding.
